The Basics of Building a Computer Part 3
By Philip Stripling of Project PET Board
Ok. Now is when you start to buy all your parts. You have to get certain parts for certain motherboards as they will only work with certain types. It is pretty easy to find out what is compatible. Once you have all your parts, THEN start to build. Don't start before you get them all. There are VERY many details that you have to look at before you can buy your parts. If you would prefer not to have to go through all that trouble, then you can just get a barebones kit. It will come with most of the necessary parts to build a computer and they will all be compatible with one another. Your motherboard will be a certain size. It will be either ATX, MicroATX or MiniATX. You have to get a case that is compatible with your size of motherboard. On the specs page for the motherboard, it will tell what size it is and on the specs page of the case, it it will tell what size it is. Your memory has to be compatible with the motherboard. It will require a certain type (ddr, ddr2, ddr dual channel, ddr2 dual channel, ddr3, laptop, Apple memory [for Macs], ECC, Flash, SDRam) and a certain speed (333 MHz, 400 MHz, 1066 MHz, 1333 MHz, 1600 MHz, 1800 MHz). Each motherboard will have different specs for different things. The cpu will have to be a certain socket number (478, 771, 754, 775, 940, AM2, AM2+, F) and the motherboard also has to support that kind of processor. It will tell what kinds it will support on the specs page. The cpu fan will have to be a certain size to fit a certain socket cpu. The HDD will have to be a certain type (ATA, SATA, RAID, IDE, Internal IDE, PATA). Here is the list of specs for a motherboard from Tiger Direct. Anything listed on here will be listed from Tiger Direct.
