Hearing Vs. Listening By Philip Stripling of Project PET Board Is there any difference between hearing and listening? The answer to that is yes. There is a very big difference between hearing and listening. Hearing is defined as the act of perceiving sound. Listening, however, is defined as to pay attention; heed. When someone is listening to you, it is easy to tell because they are generally looking at you and they are visibly paying attention to you. If they are hearing you, then they could be looking around the room, or just saying yeah to everything you say, even questions that can't have that as an answer. When someone talks to you, don't hear, listen. It's amazing how much you can learn from listening and how much more people will respect you for it. Pay attention when people talk to you. Listen, don't hear.
