Hard Drive Tips
By Philip Stripling of Project PET Board
Hey Y'all, Here are some tips and some pieces of software that might help you out if you are having a slow computer or just want to have some fun. Auslogics Boost Speed - A great program which has a built in registry cleanup and defrag, disk cleanup and defrag and many many other things. There are tweaks and other programs to help optimize your pc. BEWARE - The registry defrag will, more than likely, crash your computer. http://www.auslogics.com Sandra Lite XII SP1 - A great benchmarking program. It will benchmark most if not all of the hardware in any computer. Amazing and free. http://www.sisoftware.net/ Microsoft Bootvis - Software, like Sandra Lite, but it will benchmark your boot-up and tell you all the details you need. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/BootVis.shtml Hd Tune - A hard drive benchmarker/tuner. It will benchmark your hard drive and can possibly speed it up or help make it faster. Check Disk - An amazing feature built in to Windows that will check and repair your hard drive. If there are errors, it can and more than likely will repair them. The only reason it wouldn't is because it is damaged beyond repair. To use it: Go to My Computer>>Right-click Local Disk (C:)>>Select Properties from the drop-down menu>>Go to the tools tab>>Select Check Now under the Error-Checking section. It will ask you if you want to schedule it for the next boot-up. Select yes. If the hard drive is the D: drive and you are not running Windows off of it at the time, you can go to Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Command Prompt At the prompt type D: and then type chkdsk /x /f /r if it asks you if you want to schedule it for the next reboot, press N and then press enter. Type chkdsk /x /f /r again and then it should run. Hope that info was useful. Philip |
