Bible Study Method
By Philip Stripling of Project PET Board
Note: This can apply to anything, not just the Bible. If you aren't reading the Bible but still want to study it using this, just omit or modify the "Application" section. For anyone out there who is a Christian or who reads the Bible, if you want to study the Bible and learn a lot from it, here is a great method I learned from my Bible teacher in school (I go to a Christian school). What you do is you find a passage to read. It can be a verse, paragraph or however much you are reading. Then, you go through and answer these questions. You start with Observation. You look over the passage and just looking at the top layer of info, you answers these questions. With interpretation, you dig deeper. You will look at things like "who is referenced" or "what could this be an illustration of" and other things like that. Things that just looking at the words and not really the meanings wouldn't tell you. Inductive Bible Study Method Observation - 1. Who? 2. What? 3. When? 4. Where? 5. Why? 6. How? Interpretation - 1. Who? 2. What? 3. When? 4. Where? 5. Why? 6. How? 7. What Next? Implication - 1. What does this imply? Application - 1. So what? 2. What next? 3. Sin to confess? 4. Promise to claim? 5. How does this affect me today? 6. What difference does this make? 7. Is there and example to follow? 8. Is there a command to obey? 9. Is there knowledge to apply? The first method is mainly for New Testament (NT) study. This next method is for Old Testament (OT) books. It is for studying the books that give history. Pretty much, from the beginning up to Job. And maybe a few more. This is a very good method for learning more about the OT. It is amazing how much there is in the NT that is elaborating on the OT. Historical Narrative Method 1. Original audience? 2. Original message? 3. New Testament perspective or elaboration? 4. Application today? These are just some quotes and other things that you may find useful in your reading. “When you read ‘therefore’ in the Bible, go back and see what it’s there for.” “Observation and interpretation without application leads to frustration.” Justified – Just as if you’d never sinned S – Is there a sin to confess? P – Is there a promise to claim? E – Is there an example to follow? C – Is there a command to obey? K – Is there knowledge to apply? |
